Avec 39th & The Nortons c'est une visage folk-rock qu'il devoile, entour de fines lames de la scéne locale (dont Loïk Maille, alias de Jaromil Sabor) guitares acoustiques, claviers à la Al Kooper, et mélodies déchirantes ('21.01', 'I Realise') sont au programme de ce disque magnifique publié sur une étonnant disque bariolé.

39th & The Nortons est un groupe parisien qui existe depuis 2012. Mourning Waltz est leur troisième album. Mené par le franco anglais Nick Wheeldon (ex The Jesus Loves Heroin Band et également aux commandes du groupe Os Nostambulos), la formation a changé, avec aujourd’hui pour accompagner Nick, Loik Maille de Jaromil Sabor, Fabien Gilles, Martin Meilhan-Bordes et Sam Roux de Bootchy Temple (ses deux groupes sont sur l’excellent label parisien Howlin Banana). Déjà, une des forces de ce groupe, est la voix de Nick, qui est juste fantastique. Dans le grain, elle a parfois un petit côté Tom Verlaine. Avec eux, on a l’impression de planer dans ce qui a eu de meilleur dans les sixties, soit Love, The Byrds, Beach Boys, The Seeds, The Kinks, mais aussi dans les eighties façon The Monochrome Set, The Childs, Rain Parade, Close Lobsters. Une voix au timbre pop à rendre fleurie tout ce qui nous entoures et une musique psyché folk au son cristallin à rendre le chemin de l’école ou du travail très joyeux. Et oui, avec cette musique dans le casque, on est sûr de croiser des lapins roses et la fée clochette. Le son des instruments est dans « la ligne claire » versus haute-fidélité (= Hi-Fi). Les mélodies et les arrangements sont soignées et raffinés. Ici pas de son garage crasseux, ni de fuzz wah-wah déréglé. Non, c’est tout l’inverse, mais sans tomber dans la production « trop studio ». Il y a ici beaucoup d’âme et de fraicheur. C’est juste la grande classe ! Après le Ready To Hath de Soap Opera sortie en 2017 chez également Howling Banana, et ce Mourning Waltz de 39th and the Nortons, le son sixties « made in France » est entre de bonnes mains ! Bref, une fois de plus le label parisien Croque Macadam a visé juste en signant ce bon groupe tricolore (= les couleurs du drapeau français et anglais).

Si vous ne connaissez pas le labels Croque Macadam et Requiem pour un Twister, la parution de Mourning Waltz du groupe 39th And The Nortons, qui aura lieu courant septembre, sera peut-être l’occasion d’appréhender une sélection particulièrement intéressante de groupes actuels. Fondés par deux frangins passionnés et collectionneurs de vinyles, les deux labels se concentrent sur une scène plutôt rock, garage, indi, avec une tonalité plus internationale pour RPUT et plus frenchie pour Croque Macadam…

Revenons à 39th and the Nortons, il s’agit d’un projet mené par l’anglais Nick Wheeldon, ancien des The Jesus Loves Heroin Band, avec des musiciens français, et déjà deux albums à leur actif, dont un paru en K7 uniquement. Mourning Waltz est donc le troisième album et le premier à sortir sur un label français. Dix titres folk-rock garage sous le haut patronage des Byrds, avec quelques incursions psychédéliques et même quelques envolées à la Marc Bolan. Un disque réjouissant.

Part 1: Die Sixties-Psych-Band hat ein neues Album fertig. Hier gibt es die erste Single.

2017 war „The Dreamers“ erschienen, 2018 gibt es bereits neues Material: 39th and The Nortons werden ihr neues Album „Mourning Waltz“ via Requiem Pour Un Twister veröffentlichen. Der digitale Download steht bereits parat, eine Vinyl-Version wird demnächst folgen.

Als ersten Vorgeschmack gibt es „Orchid Flower“. Wundervoll dichter und sonniger Sixties Psych wird angeboten, der sich immer mehr verdichtet und gar ein paar Fuzz-Momente enthält.

Part 2:

Auf ihrem dritten Album liefert die Band aus Paris wieder wundervollen Sixties Psych.

39th & The Nortons wird angeführt von Nick Wheeldon (Os Noctàmbulos). Drumherum wechselt sich das Personal ab. Auf dem neuen Album „Mourning Waltz“ (Croque Macadam) ist die Besetzung im Vergleich zum Vorgänger „The Dreamers“ aber annähernd dieselbe.

So sind auch wieder Martin Meilhan-Bordes und Sam Roux von Bootchy Temple dabei, die selbst einen Longplayer in Vorbereitung haben. Die Musik von 39th & The Nortons ist wunderschöner Sixties Psych, der mal mehr in Richtung Beach Boys ausschlägt und dann wieder deutlicher nach The Kinks klingt. Da ist immer viel Melodie drin. Manchmal wird es energischer, dann atmosphärischer.

Zum Einstieg gibt es sehr angenehmen Psych Rock mit „Walking Slowly“. Die Orgel ist gediegen, die Stimmung eine freundliche. „21.01“ ist etwas aufgekratzter. Wheeldon singt verzweifelt „I’m ashamed to be a man.“

„Oh! Gene“ fällt sehr ruhig, aber dicht aus. Die Violine sorgt für leichte Melancholie. „La Cafetiére“ ist dafür wieder rockiger. Auf dem gediegenen „White Light“ übernimmt Meilhan-Bordes das Mikrofon.


"Caroline“ ist auf jeden Fall ein Hit, ebenso wie „Orchid Flower“. „Baby Blue“ geht gut nach vorne, „I Realise“ ist gar satter Garage Rock. Im Refrain fühlen wir uns an die 13th Floor Elevators erinnert. „Golden Yesterday“ bildet einen sanften Abschluss.

Fazit: Sixites Psych, wie er sein muss.

C’est assez étrange comme nom 39th & The Nortons… c’est en tout cas celui de la petite merveille Indie Garage Pop dont REQUIEM POUR UN TWISTER publie le 1er album.

Ce projet de Nick Wheeldon un anglais (Shefield, ça fait pas rire) exilé à Paris depuis le split de son groupe Jesus Loves Heroin Band, et qui en solo avait déjà publié une K7 sur Evil Hoodoo. Je précise tout ceci afin de donner une sorte de cadre, qui finalement est assez éloigné de ce qu’on entend sur cet album !

On pourrait craindre un de ce petits minets sur-éduqué qui pollue la scène Indie Néo Psyché… mais que nenni ! Certes on navigue parfois, musicalement, pas loin de cet univers, cependant ici il y a une telle richesse mélodique, harmonique, et d’intensité qu’on est loin du tout venant sur lequel certains se pignolent depuis quelques années.

Moderato (ma non troppo) allegro (ma… non troppo), Parfois lumineux, ou mélancolique comme les brumes de l’automne, cet album mais même sur les pseudo balade le groupe ne se perd pas dans les méandres du cerveau de leur leader en vaine démonstration comme c’est souvent le cas dans ces cas là. On reste toujours dans une veine qui n’oublie pas ce qui fait la grandeur des chansons : la mélodie et la capacité à toucher les auditeurs aux oreilles, au coeur ou à l’âme.
Pas de moments faibles et cet album ne sombre jamais dans le mièvre tant les musiciens sont intense dans l’interprétation des titres qui est toujours juste par rapport aux intentions !

La valse du matin décrit assez judicieusement les sensations que procurent l’écoute de ce disque !!!

I Don't Hear A Single

39th And The Nortons' third album is a revelation. Nick Wheeldon's Parisien five piece have fulfilled what the second album, The Dreamers, threatened. I've loved the band since the 2012 debut, which was largely a Wheeldon solo affair. On Trial was a fine debut, particularly considering his background was Garage Rock, although it bordered on Psych.

The Dreamers came after two albums from his noisy Os Noctambulos amd it marked an expansion of 39th And The Norton's base. They'd become a proper group and it showed. The songs had greater depth, the vocals were more upfront and it promised much,

That promise has been fully realised with this outstanding offering. I suppose you'd class them as Psych Folk, but they really are far more than that. The Psych is there for all to hear, but this is a much poppier Psych. Yes, the Organ is bursting to get out, but it's held back by the sheer quality of the songs.

At times I'm reminded of The Coral on the likes of Walking Slowly and Orchid Flower, the latter being a cracking slice of Psych Pop. Oh Gene is countrified, a splendid strum with a haunting Farfisa backdrop and a crashing twanging guitar finale.

White Light is Bolanesque in it's Tyrannosaurus Rex feel and closer, Golden Yesterday, has a laid back vibe that is almost Glasgow 1986 until it ends with a psych drift. It is the epic 21.01 that beats all around it. It's a sort of mix of The Stones, Nick Cave and The Verve which includes a Sitar solo. Think Peaky Blinders Soundtrack.

Morning Waltz is a corker of an album. Ten Songs that come from unexpected angles, one of the better things from 2018.
